um, embarrassing.

So, yesterday, I was coming back from a meeting.  It was a formal meeting so I was in the full professional ensemble - suit, button down, heels.  And, since the meeting was over, I decided to read a magazine - actually it was an interior design magazine on how to use flea market finds, very interesting.

And, I know that not all of my blog world friends live in NYC so I decided to show a photo of how this particular subway was set up and where I was standing because you kinda need to know what I'm talking about for this story to make sense.

First, there was the side pole:.

And then there is the top bar:

But this subway was crowded.  Crowded enough that, despite my best efforts, I was unable to get a seat for my trip into Brooklyn from Midtown.

Okay, the scene is set!

So, there I was.  Holding my magazine with my left hand and holding on to the side pole with my right hand.

And the subway lurches.

It throws me off balance but, no biggie, right?  I'll just grab that top pole to balance myself out.

Except... I missed.  But this is a problem because I'm off balance and inertia takes my body in a place that I don't want to be.

Specifically, into the laps of people sitting in front of me.

Guh.  Just guh.  I'm telling you, just thinking about this story is making my face turn red again.  And all I could keep saying was, "I am SO sorry.  I am SO sorry."  And it's not like you can walk away from the multitudes of people that just watched you fall into the laps of strangers.  Guh.

Have you ever done anything like this??

  1. I am accident prone myself - falling down, walking into things. As long as you just laugh it off, everything is fine. :/

  3. Yes. I once had the same experience...only throw me onto a bus in a Muslim country, surrounded by Muslim men. There I fall, a woman, into the laps of middle-aged Muslim men. Not only did I look like a fool, but crossed over a religious and cultural barrier that won me numerous faces of judgement upon me.

    FABULOUS.

  4. Aww, hehe don't worry! That has happened to me so many times! The DC metros are the jerkiest metros I've ever been on. People are flyin' all over the place every morning!

  6. Oh honey! You are not alone! Let's just say there is a hot chocolate incident that will go down in history in my house. The good news for you is that those people don't know you and you don't know them! Brush it off and next time take a wide stance! Ha!

  11. I'm a klutz, so I've done it all. But I can tell you that the people who witnessed it and the people whose laps you fell in didn't think as much about it as you did. We always are sure people are freaking out over things like that. Most of the time people are too caught up in their own worlds to dedicate more than a few minutes to thinking about someone else!

  12. Awww that is awful! I'm sorry girl! I've never done this, but I always think the people behind me in grocery stores, or in stores, etc are the people I came with and start having a conversation with them. Usually they just laugh, but it's embarrassing!

    xx

  14. happened to me on a public bus in Bangkok. Bus drevers drive like maniac. When you get on, even before you can grab for balance, the bus takes off and I've experienced being thrown to the laps/shoulders of those sited. Just an experience, they don't know you anyway (hopefully)

  15. I've done something like that! And I hardly ever use subways! I'm just such a klutz that on the few times I've ridden BART (idk if you know what that is??) I'm managed to run into people. I think we all realize it's just a hazard of riding on something like that being so crowded together with all those people. Still embarrassing, but just remember that that is life!

  18. Omg, yes that's happened to me too!! I no longer stand in the middle of the train; I'm one of those obnoxious people who either sit or stand by the door now lol.

I've actually also experienced people accidentally falling into my lap too (on the bus also)- so I guess that situation happens more often than we think. :)
