We're moving on Thursday and hired movers to take our stuff from one place to the next. This is the first time I've ever hired movers. Do you tip movers? My husband says yes. If so, how much? Does it matter how much stuff you have?
Yup, absolutely. I think it depends on how much you feel comfortable tipping. We moved a three bedroom house chock full of furniture and expensive appliances/electronics on our last move. We ended up tipping each guy $60 and provided lots of bottles of water along the way.
I think tipping is a nice gesture, it's a tough job! I've never hired movers before though. On our last move i begged my husband to get movers but he insisted on doing it himself with some friends. sigh.
Yes, a tip is appropriate in this situation - again, whatever you feel comfortable with, but I think 10-15% is standard if the job is done well. Also, the water idea is a nice touch that will be appreciated, especially if it's hot.
I've never hired movers (we usually do all the moving ourselves), but I hear you're supposed to tip. And you should tip each person. So come up with a tipping budget and split it per person.
I haven't hired movers yet either, though for whenever my next move is, I definitely will be! Since I actually have some furniture now, hehe. I think if you're working with a big moving company, the amount that trickles down to the individual movers is probably not much, so they appreciate a little tip if you're able to do it. And I'm sure they'd also appreciate cold water/popsicles. Everyone loves popsicles! Good luck with your move!
Yes definitely tip them esp. if they're moving heaving stuff. I've heard of anything from $50-$100/guy. p.s. How are the "hey we should go to Paris" conversations going? ;)
yes you definitely need to tip. i had no idea how much to tip when i hired movers and i think i handed the head guy $20 or $40 on a $450 move and he was like, uh that's not enough so i gave him another $20, which probably wasn't enough either but tipping annoys me. i also realized afterward i should have offered them water etc. but i was way distracted by how much my dogs were interfering in my move (don't know if you remember about that craziness from my blog!?)
I usually offer cold water/drinks and tip about $75-$100 per guy on the move, depending on how much they did - once 2 guys did a TON so I tipped $150 each, it's all relative though with what you feel comfy with and the standard in your area too :)
Wow, I would never think you have to tip that much -- I think our whole society goes a little crazy with the tipping. I mean, if someone really does a good job and they make the whole thing a lot easier for you and you want to give a big tip, then that is your choice - but a $100 tip as a standard? That just seems crazy. Is moving heavy stuff not their job?
Well, I don't have much experience with movers, just what we learned today! But from our experience so far, it's been pretty easy. We just told them what we wanted packed, what we didn't, and touched bases with them here and there to make sure we were all on the same page. They were really easy to work with. The same people are coming tomorrow to move everything into their big truck, today was just packing. I think we'll tip, but I doubt it'll be nearly as high as everyone was saying, we're on a SrA salary and can't really afford tips like that, so I think we'll do $20 a person, plus we bought them lunch today and will again tomorrow. Other than that...well idk, we'll have to see how tomorrow goes. ;)
Audrey Hepburn once said, "If I get married, I want to be very married." Me too! <------ still true. however, as i've moved on past wedding planning, it's worth noting that most of the content on this site has little to do with being married. mostly, it's about twenty-something law grad living in nyc. mostly.
no idea... here in Sweden, we don´t tip at all..ever..( how rude ) But I would tip those movers if i was in the states. How much...? don´t know

I have always heard that you tip movers depending on how much time they spend and stuff you have.
ReplyDeleteI would probably have to tip them a TON.

we've tipped and provided lunch and water :)
ReplyDeleteI think $20 is appropriate. They are making money moving you, so what you hand them on the side is purely cash in their pocket.
