If you live in NYC or are planning to come here soon, you absolutely must see the Alexander McQueen exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
There has been a lot of buzz about this lately and I had been wanting to see it for awhile but wasn't sure it was worth the trek up to the museum or the long line once I got there.
So, when I happened to be near the Met yesterday and when a friend said he could get me past the line, I absolutely jumped at the chance.
I'm going to post some images after the jump. However, I promise you that these photos just doesn't do it justice. It's an amazing experience and you have to see these pieces of art up close.

I love how this dress has a certain rough raggedness about it - and yet is so elegant. I urge you to check out this link to learn more.

This photo does this dress absolutely no justice. The top is millions of little glass beads and the bottom is horse hair. It was one that really stuck out to me - while it was still artistic, it was a piece that I could see myself putting on for a cocktail party.

image
There weren't any live models at the exhibit but it's amazing to see the way some of these pieces flow. They're clearly meant to be worn - not shown on mannequins.

(Let me also put a side not that I am a little turned off by some of the headpieces that accompany a lot of his dresses. However, I actually like these antlers...)

Click on the image link above and then zoom in on this dress. It's made of pheasant feathers. Gorgeous, right?

I just can't urge you enough to go see these in person. So much is lost in translation when seeing these on the computer.

There is so much about this that I like and don't like. But, whatever you think about it, it does make you think. And that by itself makes it worth sharing.
And, I leave you with this:

Not because I love it... but because I don't. Also, because I couldn't take my eyes off it. Watch the accompanying video of the "runway" show in which it was featured. It's captivating.

Stunning! I'm hoping to make it to NYC in the fall, and hopefully the exhibition will still be there!
ReplyDeleteThat last dress is horrifying, though :-)
Amazing photos! Lucky girl. Have a great weekend :)
ReplyDeleteIncredible. How people have the patience to create things like this is beyond me. They must have an extreme love of their craft.
ReplyDeleteWould love to see that. You have really inspired me to get there, He is my favourite - a true artist and he elevated fashion to another level. Very sad ending to his life.
ReplyDeleteI always love mcqueens designs, it's more conceptual than other designers
ReplyDeletehow awesome that you got to see the exhibit! there look like so many intricate and beautiful pieces to gaze at for hours.
ReplyDeleteWow! What an incredible exhibit! I would so love to have the chance to see this up close and personal! :)
ReplyDeleteYou are the second blogger now to mention the McQueen exhibit, and I am SO freakin' jealous of you. I would seriously kick a frog if it meant that I could attend.
ReplyDelete(I didn't want to say "kick a puppy" because I would never kick a puppy -- only if it was attacking me.)
