Before going to law school, I really didn't have any idea that intern scandals existed. Maybe this is because I spent my college summers 1) costuming the youth theater in my hometown 2) working for a solo financial adviser and 3) in India. Not many opportunities to get myself into trouble - or watch others get themselves into trouble.
Well, in the past 4 years or so, my eyes have been opened. Throwing young twenty somethings (or even sometimes teens) into profession settings will eventually result in at least one of them not having much common sense. Heck, I'm in my late twenties and still often think to myself, "I hope what I'm doing is considered normal by civilized society."
Anyway, the whole point of saying this is because of the buzz from JP Morgan about an intern that sent out a somewhat common sense-less email. The crux of it is after the jump:
1. There's a wild party tonight.
2. The bar has relaxed fake ID standards.
3. If you don't have a fake ID, you should get one.
Did I mention that the email was sent from his work account? And evidently sent it with high importance to "All."
Check out this story on DealBreaker. They also have two follow up emails from the same intern.
It's interesting though because a lot of the people commenting express the view that this is no big deal and what's all the fuss about? And it's not like drinking (even underage) is uncommon in corporate America. To this view, is say, "Sure. It's out there. But it's not like you should advertise it in a blast email from your work address." Maybe this could be a form over function argument? Or maybe I'd just be super annoyed if one of the new interns at my office sent this email (and then two follow ups) and I had to waste time thinking about it.
What are your thoughts on this one?

What I love most, is the retraction and the comment stating "See you at the pizza party!" That was awesome.
ReplyDeleteBut in all seriousness, I've never understood the draw of a fake ID. Then again, I started assaulting my liver long before I turned even 18, and I think because of that, I got over the excitement of drinking a lot younger than most. That and I've always been smart enough to realize that you keep your illegal actions on the down low...not blast them for everyone, peers and co-workers and uh, your BOSS to hear.
Guess it just goes with the saying "Common sense isn't all that common" ???
I still don't understand how, in this age of technology, people think they can send e-mails like this and not get caught. It is truly baffling. :/
ReplyDeleteIt's unprofessional. And if I were the boss I would sit them down and have a long talk. The whole point of internships is to learn how to be a professional of some sort. I hope someone follows up with this person to correct their error. What you do in your own time best be kept to your own time.
ReplyDeleteI was in banking a while ago, I met this girl who sent by mistake a joke for x-mas card...she was fired before new years eve...amazing!

well in a professional environment you shouldn't send e mails like that especially when you're talking about underage drinking and fake ids, it just make you look like a tool in my opinion. and in terms of underate drinking and fake ids I got no problem with them, if people want to get them done that's their decision... but I wouldn't broadcast and advertise that at work!
ReplyDeleteIt's ridiculous to think that this email was sent from a work account! From an intern who is presumably trying to get a job at this company. It makes me sad that this is now the "norm".
ReplyDeleteSeriously what are people thinking sending this from their work e=mail?
ReplyDeleteAhh kids!

This is nuts! It happens quite a lot in Fiji, I've heard so many horror stories of this sort that I've lost count. Maybe they you address this in high school...
ReplyDeleteThis makes me sick. I marvel at the immaturity and lack of professionalism that some people have. I was basically raised in a professional setting at a university because my mom would always bring me to work with her, so I think that is why I feel like I have a sense of decorum superior to most people my age. Still, you would think that common sense would kick in at some point.
